JEFF MCINTOSH/THE CANADIAN PRESS COMMENTS SHARE SAVE FOR LATER Self-dealing Re “Trump flaunts Venezuela oil deal as warning to Canada” (Aug. 31): I find it disingenuous to describe this as a “deal” with Venezuela. It has been reported that the United States has ostensibly installed a puppet government run by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. So the U.S. has made a deal with itself with little regard for the benefit to Venezuelans. The U.S. seems to be treating Venezuela as a colony. The story should be about growing U.S. imperialism. Ross Tellett Toronto Friends and enemies Re “Canada’s tough U.S. stand wins fans in China” (Aug. 27): In spite of recent thawing, China remains a strategic adversary of Canada. The United States has now joined in attacking Canada’s economy. It brings to mind the phrase: “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” I would prefer our tough stand wins fans in the U.S rather than in China. This is further evidenced by a recent Pew Research Center survey which reported that China is now viewed more favourably than the United States in many countries. To my fellow Canadians: Enjoy the moment. Marty Cutler Toronto Better together Re: “Alberta, Saskatchewan push back on calls for oil, potash export levies in retaliation for U.S. tariffs” (Aug. 27): Are there traitors in our midst posing as loyal provincial leaders? If Canada is “at war” with the United States and fighting for our survival, and there are leaders withholding potent weapons that Canada can use, can they by any measure be called loyal, patriotic Canadians? Danielle Smith and Scott Moe want the benefit of the sacrifices other Canadians are making in this “war,” but refuse to put two of our most strategic weapons on the frontline. It’s as if Ms. Smith has already split Alberta from Canada for any good its remaining adds to our national security. At this point, I note that the Prime Minister has the constitutional authority to stop or restrict the sale of oil and potash to the U.S. Maybe that’s our answer to this “red line” that borders on treason.
