Metro St. John's speed cameras record $20 million of infractions in first year

PHOTO BY KEITH GOSSE/THE TELEGRAM Article content Less than a year after the NL Government installed the first of four speed cameras in St. John’s and Mount Pearl, more than 45,000 infractions have been recorded — roughly 1,000 per week — according to data obtained by The Telegram via Access to Information requests. Article content The violations represent more than $20 million in ticket revenue for the province. Article content Article content The 45,134 speeding infractions were recorded on four cameras that began recording from September 2025 onward. Article content Article content The first to go online was at Waterford Bridge Road (September 2025), followed by Larkhall Street (also September), then Karwood Drive (October) and Blackmarsh Road at Stonegate Crescent (December). Article content The data, obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration, was parsed to include only those infractions which were a minimum of 11 kilometres over the posted speed limit. Article content The most frequent violation was for speeding between 11 and 20 kilometres per hour over the limit in school zones. A total of 27,539 infractions fell under this category, while some 9,357 drivers were clocked going between 21 and 30 kilometres per hour over the limit in school zones. Article content NL’s provincial Highway Traffic Act sets minimum fines for speeding outside school zones and construction zones at $200 (for 11-20 km/hr over the limit); $300 (21-30 km/hr over the limit); $400 (31-50 km/hr); and $500 for 51 km/hr and above over the limit. Article content With the exception of Blackmarsh Road, three of the four speed cameras placed throughout St. John’s are located within school zones, where minimum fines increase to $300 (11-20 km/hr over the limit); $500 (21-30 km/hr over the limit), $700 (31-50 km/hr over the limit) and $900 for 51 km/hr and above over the limit.
