Israeli soldiers on Sunday began intercepting several ships of a flotilla that was attempting to break Israel's maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military said it had boarded one of the vessels and detained about 40 passengers. The flotilla left from Istanbul earlier this week and included activists, journalists and aid workers.
Israel has long maintained its blockade on Gaza as a security measure following Hamas' takeover of the territory in 2007. Gaza is currently governed by the militant group, which Israel and Egypt refuse to recognize as a legitimate authority.
