The World Health Organization says there have been 1,975 suspected cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since August 2018. There have been 1,436 confirmed and probable cases, including 830 deaths, according to the WHO.
Ebola is a highly infectious and deadly virus that can cause fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and internal and external bleeding. It spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. The disease has an incubation period of two to 21 days, meaning someone infected may not show symptoms for up to three weeks after exposure.
