Pregnant people in one-fifth of Ontario hospitals and health units are not being screened properly for syphilis, according to a new study.
The research, published in the Canadian Journal of Infection Control, found that 20 per cent of health-care facilities in Ontario were not following recommended guidelines for screening all pregnant individuals for syphilis. The guideline was updated in 2015 to require routine screening in every pregnancy, but it appears the new protocol is not being uniformly followed.
