OpenAI has avoided what could have been a costly legal defeat in its ongoing dispute with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, but both parties are left with significant challenges moving forward.
In March 2023, a US District Court judge ruled that OpenAI’s use of certain datasets to train its AI models infringed on the copyright of Getty Images. The case was settled out of court in June 2023, and while the exact terms of the settlement were not disclosed, it is understood that OpenAI agreed to pay damages and make changes to its data sourcing practices.
