A new study from the University of Toronto has found that one in five pregnant people in Ontario are not being screened properly for syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can have serious health consequences if left untreated.
The research, published in the Canadian Journal of Infectious Diseases and Medical Hygiene, analyzed data from 169,043 pregnant individuals who gave birth between January 2015 and December 2020. The findings revealed that while screening rates for syphilis increased during the study period, there remains a significant gap in proper testing protocols.
