The consumer price index (CPI) increased by 1.4% month-over-month in April, bringing the annual inflation rate to 2.8%, up from 2.3% in March, according to data released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday.
"The increase in the overall CPI reflects higher prices for shelter, air transport, and fuel," said Sabrina Thorson, a senior analyst at Statistics Canada.
Shelter costs, which account for about one-third of the total CPI basket, rose 0.5% month-over-month to an annual rate of 2.8%. This includes increases in both owner equivalent rent (1.4%) and tenant rents (3.6%).
