The award-winning chocolate company added a Lake Ontario chocolate bar to their selection Thursday. The company was founded in Antigonish by the Hadhad family, who came to Canada from a refugee camp following their escape from the Syrian civil war more than a decade ago. Founder and CEO Tareq Hadhad said in an email that we are living in unusual times. “They tried to remove Lake Ontario from the map. We put its name on a chocolate bar to keep it visible. Businesses have a responsibility now more than ever to stand up for our country and its history,” he said. The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontarí’io and dates back more than 400 years. “It existed before today’s borders. That history should not be erased, and our family knows what it means to lose a home,” Hadhad said.
