Article Excerpt
The dam at Dares Lake has breached. PHOTO BY GOOGLE MAPS Emergency officials are responding to a breach in the Dares Lake dam, which serves as Lunenburg’s drinking water source. Crews using heavy equipment are working to stabilize the breach and reduce water flow while engineers assess conditions. Lunenburg County REMO, the region’s emergency management organization, has partially activated its emergency co-ordination centre to assist with planning and public communications. No action is required by residents at this time. However, town officials said residents could choose to voluntarily reduce water consumption. Emergency officials will continue to assess dam stability, evaluate potential downstream impacts and monitor the municipal water supply. Residents are asked to avoid the Dares Lake area so emergency personnel, engineers and contractors can work safely. Updates can be found on the REMO Facebook page, lunenburgremo.ca, municipal websites and social media channels. Recorded updates will be available on the REMO public information line at 902-530-7366.
