Breach at Dares Lake dam remains stable as work continues on pumps

PHOTO BY GOOGLE MAPS The Dares Lake dam breach remains stable, with berms and trenches continuing to divert water from the pumphouse, according to Lunenburg’s Regional Emergency Management Organization. Water conservation efforts have produced results overnight, with low reservoir levels continuing to improve, said a Friday morning statement. Two of the three pumps remain functional but not at full capacity. The third is not operational and will be replaced as soon as possible. Water conservation measures remain in place as the emergency response to the breach continues. Lunenburg’s water conservation directive is still in effect and residents and businesses in the area are reminded they are required to limit usage to essential purposes, such as drinking, cooking, sanitation and hygiene. Water levels will be reassessed later today. The dam remains stable, with berms and trenches continuing to divert water from the pumphouse. Residents are reminded to stay away from the Dares Lake area and allow emergency personnel, contractors and heavy equipment operators to work safely. The Regional Emergency Management Organization said local fire services have transitioned to rural firefighting operations if required. Water tankers and mutual aid resources are available and will be utilized as needed.
