Adam Pearlman’s national-team audition: From Halifax homecoming with Cavalry FC to Canada’s radar

He’s one of the best young players in the Canadian Premier League, he’s a first-into-the-starting-XI talent for the loop’s top club, and — perhaps most tantalizing — he’s a Canadian soccer phenom making a case for the national team. “I think he’s a future national team player,” said Cavalry gaffer Tommy Wheeldon Jr. matter-of-factly. “We’re just helping him on part of his journey, and — vice versa — he’s helping us in our journey. “And when you get your goals aligned like that, good things happen.” Good things are, indeed, happening for both Pearlman and Cavalry. The 21-year-old defender has gone from promising Toronto FC academy kid to a player increasingly difficult to ignore, and Monday’s Labour Day visit to the Maritimes offers a particularly neat subplot: Pearlman will return to the city — and club — that helped restart his career when Cavalry (13W-2L-4D) takes on host HFX Wanderers FC (5-10-5) in Halifax (1 p.m. MT, TSN2/OneSoccer, OneSoccer.ca). Yes, the fullback is now wearing Cavalry colours, committed to helping the team sitting atop the CPL table gun for another footie title, but there is that buzz about getting back into the Canadian national-team conversation. Yet he insists that he isn’t spending his days refreshing Jesse Marsch’s contact list. “I like to control what I can control and let the other things around take care of itself,” Pearlman said. “I can’t really control any of the outside stuff. His family moved to Thornhill, Ont., when he was seven, and his development continued with Glen Shields SC and Future Soccer Academy before he joined the Toronto FC Academy in 2016.
