Article content By this winter, it will be open for adventurers who will rocket down in carts going at around 50 kilometres an hour at top speed. Article content Article content “It will be the very first mountain coaster in Atlantic Canada,” said Martin Kejval, CEO of Cape Smokey Holding Ltd., owner of Ski Martock, while hiking up the hillside to the construction site Wednesday. Article content Article content The track, with over a kilometre of snaking turns and two tunnels, is still very much unfinished, but Kejval said the goal is to finish it and the terminals at both ends for opening day Dec. 21. Article content Popular in Europe but also at other ski resorts across the country, Kejval described a mountain coaster as “a sexy version of a roller coaster . . . because you can control your own speed.” Article content Each cart seats two people so parents can hold onto young ones and they can take a leisurely glide . . . or not. Article content “It’s not only about the thrills of a ride or coming on a mountain coaster, but it’s also about being in nature, in the forest. You’re whizzing around, between trees, and yeah, it’s for those who want to remember that they have an inner child inside of them as well,” said Kejval, a former professional alpine skier and member of the Czech national team.
