Article content The Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education (CCRCE) said during the winter it had a shortage of spare bus drivers, particularly within Colchester County and East Hants. Article content Article content This information was provided in response to Debert resident Catherine Rushton’s concerns after her two daughters experienced disruptions to their bus routes when two drivers retired. Article content Article content A recent statement from Jennifer Rodgers, a spokesperson for CCRCE, indicates student transportation in Colchester County is proceeding smoothly this school year. All regular bus routes are currently covered, and there are enough spare drivers to fill in if needed. Article content ‘HOPEFULLY, THIS YEAR’S BETTER’ Article content Rushton is optimistic about her daughters’ transportation to school this year; however, she worries about potential shortages in the future. Article content “For me, I’m concerned that it’s going to happen again, that they’re not going to have a full complement of drivers and backup drivers,” Rushton said in a Sept. 8 interview. Article content Rushton hopes the CCRCE will clearly communicate with parents if buses are not fully staffed. The disruptions in January were eventually resolved, but Rushton said this wasn’t communicated to her.
