PHOTO BY GOOGLE MAPS Article content PICTOU – The Town of Pictou is restoring its woodlands hit hard by post-tropical storm Fiona in 2022. Article content The town announced Sept. 3 that Pictou’s Fitness Trails and woodlands will be replanted with 75,000 native seedlings. It said in a news release that the project was fully funded with the trees and shrubs coming through the Thriving Forests Program. Article content Article content The program is a provincial tree-planting and ecosystem restoration initiative led by the Clean Foundation in partnership with the provincial and federal governments. Thriving Forests is aiding the province’s goal to plant up to 21 million trees by 2031 on private and public lands, which was first announced by the federal and provincial governments in August 2024, with funding from the federal government’s 2 Billion Trees program. Article content Article content “The town is grateful for the support of the Clean Foundation and Thriving Forests,” Mayor Jim Ryan said in the news release. “Trees planted now will protect the integrity of our green spaces and support biodiversity for generations to come.” Article content Workers planted the seedlings in the area of the Fitness Trails and Glen Road East between Sept. 5 and 7. Article content The trees planted under this program will help restore forest health and biodiversity, specifically in areas that will not be used for commercial forestry. Trees and shrubs in this planting include a mix of species native to the province’s Wabanaki-Acadian and boreal forests, sourced from seeds in Atlantic Canada.
