The award was given to recognize the community's four decades of Indigenous-led nation building, economic development and strong governance. Chief Terry Paul has led the First Nation located on Unama'ki (Cape Breton) for more than four decades. PHOTO BY ROSEMARY GODIN /CAPE BRETON POST Article content Membertou First Nation in Unama’ki has received another award based on its economic development and governance.  Article content Article content Executive director of Membertou administration Trevor Bernard travelled to the 2026 Victoria Forum of Fulbright Canada late last month on behalf of the community to accept an Honouring Nations Canada award given to Membertou for its “four decades of Indigenous-led nation building, economic development and strong governance.”  Article content Article content The First Nation has had the same leader in Chief Terry Paul for over four decades.  Article content “This is an incredible honour for our community to be recognized on this national stage,” reads a statement released by Membertou. “We look forward to continuing on this path of community development, sovereignty, and self-determination for generations to come.”  Article content Bernard was a speaker at the three-day event. A lawyer called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 2003, he has worked with Membertou – his home community – since 2004 first serving as associate general legal counsel and then becoming executive director in April 2005.  Article content Bernard is responsible for overseeing Membertou’s government programs and counsels Membertou on a range of legal issues, including employment law and contracts to land matters.
