PHOTO BY AVALONHOLOGRAPHICS.COM Article content A St. John’s-based deep tech company preparing to deliver innovative 3D technologies to the world is getting a big financial boost from defence tech giant Lockheed Martin Corporation. Article content Avalon Holographics Inc., which specializes in holographic technology, has signed a $5.6 million contact with Lockheed Martin Canada to support the continued advancement and application of first-of-their-kind 3D displays. Article content Lockheed Martin Canada has contracts with the federal government’s River-class destroyer program and the Victoria-class Submarine Command and Control System contract. Article content Under Canada’s Industrial and Technological Benefits policy, Lockheed Martin is obligated to undertake business activity in Canada equal to the value of the contracts it has won. Article content To fulfill that commitment in relation to its destroyer and submarine contracts, the company started collaborating with Avalon Holographics. Article content It initially made a Phase 1 investment of $6.1 million to help progress core holographic capabilities and accelerate the transition from early-stage development to commercial deployment. Article content This also included the installation of an Avalon Holographics display at Lockheed Martin’s Centre for Innovation, also known as The Lighthouse, in Suffolk, Va.
