PHOTO BY TIM KROCHAK Article content Workers at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce contact centre in Halifax were blindsided by layoffs last week, says one employee who received a notice. Article content “We were completely caught off guard when the news began breaking to individuals last week, and this is just the first group of layoffs,” said the employee, who agreed to speak to The Chronicle Herald on the condition of anonymity. Article content Article content Article content “The affected employees were notified last week in one-to-one meetings. It genuinely came as a shock to everyone involved. “ Article content The employee, who worked for CIBC for a decade in telephone banking, said the bank’s contact centres employed about 3,000 people nationwide, including 400 to 500 people in Halifax. Some of the jobs were performed remotely. Article content The employee said CIBC management refused to answer their questions, other than to acknowledge their roles were being eliminated due to business restructuring. Article content “Instead, we’ve been directed to our severance information package.” Article content A message to CIBC for comment was not immediately returned. Article content The laid-off workers will receive severance based on years of service, they said. Article content “I’ll be OK myself, but I do worry about my wonderful co-workers, especially single parents and those living paycheque to paycheque. For many of them, this was their livelihood. Article content “I know some people haven’t been affected, but staff morale is at an all-time low.
