Article content Alison Grant, the town’s director of governance and strategy, shared details about the upcoming cull at the Sept. 14 council meeting. Article content Article content “We have a number of things that need to get in place, but we’re pretty optimistic that we can start Oct. 1,” said Grant, adding the controlled hunt usually runs for about two months. Article content Article content “We’ll start on some of the sites earlier than others. We sort of balance them as we go, but then usually the hunt wraps up around Dec. 1.” Article content Since 2022, Truro has carried out an annual hunt as part of its deer management program. Last year’s organized cull bagged a record of 88 deer. Article content The town plans to hunt at five or six designated sites, said Grant, which are all the same as last year. She added the town doesn’t usually reveal the exact locations. Article content “We do know that we are making progress in the areas we are hunting because our sites are starting to not be as productive,” said Grant. Article content Again, the town is partnering with Dalhousie University, Feed Nova Scotia, and Millbrook First Nation for the cull. Article content It is budgeting about $40,000 for the hunt, said Grant. The province covers the cost of butchering the deer. Article content PROVINCIAL FRAMEWORK Article content Grant said that while the town would like to look at new hunting locations this year, it has been asked to keep their current sites while the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fleshes out a provincial framework for all municipalities when it comes to conducting deer culls.
