CONTRIBUTED Article content Community Fair Day is a well-anticipated event in the village of Port Morien. Port Morien is a special place to live and raise a family. Two of the main reasons are the people and the rustic way of life. Article content Article content The fair is an example of community spirit where people contribute freely of their time to give the local area one day each year where we can display the best of what we have produced and provide an occasion where local residents can get out and socialize with friends in a festive atmosphere. Article content Article content This year, the fair is celebrating 80 years of existence. That’s a remarkable achievement! Article content When I moved to the area, I remember that the fair was organized by a dedicated crew of volunteers led by the very capable Margie MacQueen. Jean MacQueen, Barb Peach, Una Peach, Anna MacPherson, Mark Penny, Mae Nicholson – just to name a few. These people gave long and dedicated service to the community fair. Article content Margie MacQueen was a very capable chairperson. She amazed everyone with her energy and enthusiasm. But time has taken its toll. Article content There was a time in the village when the fair committee was getting older and there was a fear that the end of the fair was coming. Article content NEW CROP OF VOLUNTEERS Article content Morienites are a proud people who never want to see things disappear. The next generation led by Katherine Snow and Myrna Boutilier-Murphy stepped up to fill the void. This young, dedicated committee worked long and hard to make the fair an outstanding success.
