Article content The beating happened in a dayroom at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility and was captured on surveillance video. Article content Article content Victim Kurt Gould was hospitalized for about three weeks. He refused to provide a statement to police or identify the eight men who attacked him. Article content Article content Police charged six men with aggravated assault in January 2025 and a seventh man in July 2025. Their trial was set for this August in Dartmouth provincial court, but the defendants began accepting responsibility for lesser offences in July. Article content Five men have pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, one to assault with a weapon, and one to common assault. Article content Tyler Matthew Mullen, 31, appeared in Dartmouth provincial court Wednesday via a video link from a federal prison for sentencing on a charge of assault causing bodily harm. Article content Crown attorney Sarah Kirby opened the hearing by reading an agreed statement of facts into the record. Article content According to those facts, Gould was admitted to the Dartmouth jail Aug. 28, 2024. During admission, he advised correctional officers that he wished to be housed in the West 2 unit. Article content A short time after he was placed in the unit, guards responded to a fight in the dayroom. Gould was standing by the door to the guard station with a bloody face and was escorted to the jail’s health-care unit for a medical assessment.
