Article content Article content That’s the idea behind the Big Fiddle Family Festival, a family fun day event hosted by the Port of Sydney on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. Article content “We’ve got dozens of cruise ships that come in. A 167,000-plus passengers are coming off the ships this season,” says Mark Inglis, Port of Sydney’s manager of marketing and business development. “Quite often, community members might feel that (the waterfront) is meant for those cruise passengers. Article content Article content “We wanted to remind the community that it’s for them as well.” Article content Happening by the Big Fiddle, Thursday afternoon and evening will feature several events for children and adults alike: a live magic show with Jokers Wild, an interactive reptile experience with Cold Blooded Adventures, lawn games, fiddlers, Highland dancers, bouncy houses, and special character appearances. Article content All of the festival activities are free of charge, and many of them will be taking place at the Liberty Pier, in particular. Article content “More than anything, it’s a gift to the community from the Port of Sydney,” said Inglis. Article content There will also be several food vendors available, and shops located near the Fiddle will remain open throughout the event. Inglis says the shop owners have been top of mind as they attempt to draw more locals to the waterfront, which has been a priority for them throughout the summer during their Meet Me at the Fiddle campaign, attracting locals to see what the pier has in store. Article content Article content “Encouraging people to come down and have a coffee,” he said. “Have lunch, explore the shops, just walk the boardwalk, start or end at the Fiddle.
