PHOTO BY DIANE CROCKER/THE TELEGRAM Article content The man accused of stabbing a Corner Brook businessman will make a case for why he should be released on bail on Friday, Sept. 25. Article content Gregg Musakanda was arrested on Sept. 14 after police responded to a report of a stabbing at Downtown Entertainment in the Valley Mall. Article content Article content Owner Doug Payne was stabbed five times in the violent attack. Article content His attacker, later identified as Musakanda, fled the scene in the area of Valley Road and was later arrested at a residence not far from the mall. Article content Article content He’s charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, disguise with intent and break and enter. The break and enter is in relation to the home where he was arrested. Article content It’s alleged that Musakanda was dressed all in black with his face covered by a mask and gloves on his hands when the attack occurred. He was seen sitting outside the Valley Mall with an umbrella covering his head prior to the attack. Article content His lawyer, Jill Quilty, requested that the matter be set for a bail hearing during an appearance in provincial court on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Article content Musakanda appeared via Zoom from the Corner Brook Lockup, and Quilty requested that he appear in person for the bail hearing. Article content She also asked that his potential surety be permitted to appear by video. Article content Judge Wayne Gorman granted both requests and ordered that Musakanda continue to be held in custody.
