PHOTO BY STEVE BRUCE Article content A man who tried to make two 13-year-old boys drink alcohol in a washroom at a Halifax mall has been handed a conditional discharge with a year of probation. Article content Mahir Ali Ibrahin, 28, of Beechville was arrested May 23, 2025, the day after the incident at Halifax Shopping Centre, and charged with two counts each of forcible confinement and administering a noxious substance. Article content Article content Article content He pleaded guilty in Halifax provincial court last November to one charge of administering a noxious substance. The charge was amended to include both boys and to say that he administered the substance “with intent to aggrieve or annoy” them. Article content Ibrahin was sentenced Monday by Judge Christine Driscoll, who accepted a joint recommendation from Crown attorney Kavi Gunawardane and defence lawyer Jonathan Squires. Article content The judge said three reports prepared for sentencing show the incident was out of character for Ibrahin, who had never been in trouble with the law before and was abusing alcohol at the time to cope with his brother’s diagnosis of terminal brain cancer. Article content Driscoll said the conditional discharge was appropriate in the circumstances of this offence and this offender and would not be contrary to the public interest.
