Article content “Myself, (first baseman) Tyler Taylor and (pitcher) Tanner (MacLean) all came there together (as young players) when they needed some bodies,” recalled the now-23-year-old Picketts, from Kensington, P.E.I. Article content Article content “We started showing up and we never really stopped.” Article content Article content That was six years ago, which ironically began a magical run the Islanders are currently on in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League. The Islanders won their fourth NBSBL playoff title – and fifth in six years – on Sept. 20 with a 4-1 series win over the Chatham Ironmen in the best-of-seven final. Article content “It’s pretty crazy because that year we joined would have been the year they won in Moncton and we all went back to school,” said Picketts. “They made a crazy run to win the league against Moncton and that is what really kickstarted the whole franchise.” Article content Now known and respected nationally – the Islanders won the 2025 Baseball Canada national senior men’s championship and a bronze medal in 2022 – Picketts understands Charlottetown is a team that teams want to beat. Article content “I definitely think for a little bit now we’re definitely the evil empire, like the (New York) Yankees were a little while ago, and the (Los Angeles) Dodgers are now,” said Picketts. “Teams are definitely gunning for us… but we wouldn’t want to have it any other way.” Article content Article content A catcher for most of his career, Picketts has transitioned to right field with former pro Cole MacLaren handling the bulk of the catching duties with the Islanders.
