I.N.K. groups articles by their headlines. Each headline is reduced to its distinctive words (common words and words under three letters are dropped), and a new article joins an existing cluster when the overlap between the two sets of words — Jaccard similarity — reaches a threshold (by default 0.25) and the cluster was active within the last 24 hours (by default). Otherwise it starts a cluster of its own.
That method is simple and fully inspectable, and it has known limits: one story told in different words can be split across two clusters, and two different stories that share distinctive words can be merged into one. It does not read entities, dates or quoted figures. Treat a cluster as a strong lead on “the same event”, not a verdict.
The spread shown on each card is the 0–100 score of how far the scored articles sit from one another on the five-band scale (0 = no spread, 100 = a full left-to-right split). A cluster carried by fewer than six outlets is flagged as a blindspot seed: it may be a small story, or one only part of the press noticed.
The median lean is the middle band across the cluster, not an average. Averaging a bimodal cluster — half Left, half Right — would report a centre that nobody actually published. The spread line names the two ends of the range, so a tight cluster and a split one can never read the same. Bands are scored per article, not fixed to an outlet: the same newsroom can land in different bands on different stories.
