Woman injured in bear attack near Whistler

PHOTO BY MIKE DREW /Mike Drew/Postmedia A woman was injured in a bear attack in the backcountry outside Whistler on Friday evening. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service says at about 5 p.m., a group of three hikers encountered two bears near Conflict Lake, in the Callaghan Conservancy. A woman was attacked by one of the bears before it stopped. Conservation officers have not yet confirmed whether the woman was attacked by a black bear or grizzly bear. The B.C. COS predator attack team, Squamish RCMP officers and Squamish Search and Rescue members flew to the site by helicopter. The woman received first aid on site and was transported via helicopter to hospital, where she received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the COS. Conservation officers are returning to the site Saturday to continue their investigation. Trail access in the area has been closed and signage is posted.
