Article content As a young player, Conrad benefited from veteran leadership. Now the 19-year-old defenceman will look to pay it forward as he was named team captain of the QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders on Sept. 17. Article content Article content “It’s a huge honour,” Conrad told The Guardian in a phone interview. “It means a lot. Article content “I’ve been here for four years. I’ve learned a lot through here and I’ve learned a lot through Marcus (Kearsey), my former captain, and Michael Horth, my captain my first year, and I’ve always looked up to those guys.” Article content Asked what are the biggest things he learned from veterans like Kearsey and Horth, Conrad answered the way they carried themselves and treated other people. Article content “All the little things that people may not notice or pick up on,” said Conrad, from Stellarton, N.S. “I always kind of looked up to those guys. Article content “Especially in my younger years, you noticed little things they did and things they did for other people just around the room and the community. Article content “You just pick up on what good people they are and what kind of leaders they are, in and out of the room.” Article content Article content Article content Leadership style Article content As for his own leadership style, the six-foot-three, 215-pound Conrad said he is probably not the most vocal player.
