The meeting follows a shooting last week in which a male victim, whose identity has not been made public, passed away. RCMP subsequently charged an Alberta 25-year-old with murder. Clarkson said the town hall meeting is an opportunity for the RCMP to explain its work, for residents to discuss what they can do as a community, and to address the demand for drugs in Inuvik – an issue Clarkson said can be tackled through collaboration between the town, Indigenous governments, the GNWT and RCMP. Community wellness workers and social workers are already engaging with residents, Clarkson said, with help from the town to facilitate this. “We can all work towards making our community a safer place, a healthier place,” said Clarkson.
