Article content The Quick as a Wink Theatre Society is bringing the classic musical My Fair Lady to the stage for seven shows between Oct. 16 and 24. Article content Article content “My Fair Lady is easily my favourite musical, and I am over the moon to be the director for the show,” Mike Butler said in a news release. “Our team has assembled four dozen community theatre actors to bring this musical to life with incredible costumes, a fabulous pit band, and countless hours of rehearsal. It’s a show that you should not miss.” Article content Article content Butler is working with music director Michael Nelson, producers David and Jeannie Myles, and choreographer Callie Mackintosh on the production. The team was behind Quick as a Wink’s shows of Grease, Shrek, Mamma Mia, and Beauty and the Beast, and it is eager to get My Fair Lady in front of audiences. Article content It is the first time since 1997 My Fair Lady will be performed in the Annapolis Valley. Article content My Fair Lady, based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play Pygmalion, was a hit Broadway show from the late 1950s. It won the Tony Award for best musical in 1957. Article content The Broadway musical and the London production, both starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, set a record at the time for the longest run of any Broadway musical. Many revivals have since taken place with the 1964 film version starring Audrey Hepburn and Harrison winning eight Academy Awards, including best picture. Article content It is a family friendly musical with a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story has Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl, taking speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phonetician, so she may pass as a lady. Article content Article content The production…
