Gavin Young/Postmedia Article content On Monday evening, Calgary Fire Department crews contained a blaze at a southeast landfill that started burning Sunday night. Article content Responders received reports of flames and smoke near Shepard Road S.E. around 6 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the fire department on Monday. Crews arrived to find a fire on the east side of Ecco Recycling — between 24th Street and Barlow Trail S.E. — though access to the fire was “extremely limited” due to poor road configuration at the facility and rainy weather conditions. Article content “This operation continues (Monday) and is being supported by landfill staff. The City of Calgary Waste and Recycling Services is also providing equipment and expertise to the site to bring the fire under control and eventually extinguish the fire,” read the news release. Article content The closest fire hydrant is nearly a kilometre away, so crews were having to use extra hoses and pumper trucks to keep the pressure high enough to fight the fire, according to Postmedia’s observations from the fire scene. Article content Keith Stahl, a battalion chief with the CFD, initially said it is unknown how long it will take to extinguish the fire.
