Article content Firefighters responded to the blaze at 147 Street and 88 Avenue Monday morning, bringing it under control. Police said no injuries were reported. Article content “Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services deemed the fire as suspicious,” police said in a late Tuesday email. Officials haven’t yet said what caused the fire. Article content The home was vacant and recently purchased by infill developer Davach Properties. It was one of seven on the street that had been sold to make way for multi-unit projects. Article content The influx of infill was the reason around 200 people gathered at that exact intersection hours before the blaze to protest the city’s greenlighting of such projects. Residents said multi-unit infill is hurting the character of Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods. Article content Article content They said more than 50 units will replace seven single-family homes, which they worry will cause issues with traffic, garbage collection and snow removal — and hurt the values of existing homes in the community.
