PHOTO BY GREG SOUTHAM /Postmedia Article content Former federal NDP candidate, CBC journalist and school board trustee Trisha Estabrooks has been nominated by the Alberta NDP as its candidate for Edmonton-Strathcona. Article content Estabrooks will be replacing the current MLA for the riding and Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi, who announced in mid-July his intention to forgo his central Edmonton seat in favour of a riding in Calgary, a city where he served as mayor for three terms. Article content Article content Article content Nenshi won the riding in June 2025 by 80 per cent of the votes, holding onto the party’s base and riding it has held since 1997. Article content In the 2025 federal election, Estabrooks finished third behind winning Liberal candidate Eleanor Olszewski in seeking the Edmonton-Centre federal seat. Estabrooks announced in July she was seeking the nomination for Edmonton-Strathcona. Article content According to the results of the 2023 provincial election, Edmonton-Strathcona was the safest Alberta NDP seat in the province, with a 10,948 vote margin of victory — the sixth highest across all provincial ridings. Article content Estabrooks was previously a reporter at CBC for 17 years before serving two terms as chair of the board at Edmonton Public Schools. She is currently working with Friends of Medicare.
