A man involved in a shootout that wounded at least three and plunged West Edmonton Mall into chaos has admitted to two firearms offences.

Leron Andrew John, 27, pleaded guilty in Edmonton Court of King’s Bench Wednesday to possessing a handgun with a defaced serial number without a licence. The charges stem from an Aug. 21, 2023, shootout outside West Edmonton Mall that forced a lockdown of the massive commercial complex for several hours.

John was part of a group of men targeted by a shooter in a white SUV shortly after they left the Wild West Shooting Centre near the mall’s entrance 55. John pulled out a 9mm pistol and returned fire. He then fled into the mall, threw the gun in a trash can and evaded police until early 2025, when he was arrested in the Northwest Territories.
